Preparing for your appointment
Valid identification is required for all signers and must be available at the time of notarization. The ID needs to be current (not expired) or issued within the last five years. The following ID's are valid for notarization:
- State Issued Driver’s License
- State Issued ID Card
- US Passport
- Foreign Passport with U.S. stamp from Immigration and Naturalization Service
Documents should be completed, but NOT signed before the notary arrives.
Know what type of notarization is required:
- Acknowledgment - Certifies that the signer appeared before the notary, the signer acknowledged signing the document, and to the identity of the signer.
- Jurat - Certifies that the signer appeared before the notary, the signer signed the document in the presence of the notary, and that the notary administered an oath or affirmation to the signer (to the truthfulness of the statements in the document).
All signers must be present, competent and willing to sign documents.
